Academics- A Rich Tradition of Individualized Learning

The Opportunity School’s curriculum is purposefully designed to prepare each student for a General Education Development (GED) diploma. Classroom work is self-paced and designed to help students learn, even in areas where they may struggle. Teachers and counselors are professional educators, state-certified, and dedicated to unlocking the academic potential of each student. The award-winning JROTC program is designed to foster a student’s self-confidence, leadership capabilities and team building skills.

Upon entrance to the school, each student is given the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and placed in academic and vocational classes based upon their interests and abilities.

For more information about the GED program, visit the South Carolina Department of Education's website on the General Education Developent. (This link will open a new browser window)

Pre-GED
The WLGOS Academics Department requires that a student take and pass a Pre-GED test. This test is given to determine whether a student is prepared to take the GED. The Pre-test is a shorter version of the actual GED. It is given and scored by the Academics staff of WLGOS. All five areas of the GED are given: Science, Social Studies, Reading, Math and Writing. A total score of 2250 is required with a score in EACH AREA of no less than 410. A passing score of 410 in each area does not guarantee a total passing score for the GED. For example: 5 X 410 = 2050. It is important that a student understand he/she must pass each of the five areas and have a total score of 2250 or higher. These are the same requirements for passing the National GED.
GED
A student who passes the Pre-GED will be allowed to take the GED test that is given by the S.C. State Department of Education, usually on our campus. It is generally given in a two-day period. This test is longer, but is similar to the Pre-test. The requirements to pass are the same as the Pre-test: a total score of 2250 with a minimum of 410 in each area. The tests are scored by a professional scoring center for the National GED. Scores are mailed to Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School and students are informed of their score. Our goal is that every student makes significant educational progress. We want each student to qualify to take and then pass the GED. If he/she does not obtain a GED during their enrollment, we encourage him/her to continue with their education, and we help to provide information about further appropriate educational opportunities.
